Ingredients
What the words on a psychoactive gummy label mean, and what labs found when they checked. Includes compounds that turned up even though no label listed them.
Psilocybin / psilocin
What psilocybin and psilocin are, why psilocin without psilocybin in a gummy is a warning sign, and what tests of retail gummies have found.
On the label Rarely named outright. Often implied by 'magic mushroom', 'microdose' or 'psychedelic blend'. Some labels say 'psilocybin-free'.
Amanita muscaria / muscimol
What muscimol and Amanita muscaria are, what FDA has said about them in food, and why Amanita-labelled gummies often turn out to contain something else.
On the label 'Amanita muscaria extract', 'fly agaric', 'muscimol', 'ibotenic acid' or 'muscarine', often with functional mushrooms and the word 'legal'.
Synthetic tryptamines
Lab-made psychedelics related to psilocin keep turning up in 'mushroom' gummies. Which ones have been found, where, and what is known about them.
On the label Almost never listed. Found under labels like 'mushroom blend extract', 'Magic Mushroom Microdose Blend' or 'Proprietary Nootropic Mushroom Blend'.
Kava (kavalactones)
Kava is sold openly in gummies, and has also turned up undisclosed in 'mushroom' gummies. What trials found about anxiety, and the liver question.
On the label 'Kava', 'kava kava' or 'kavalactones' on kava products. Absent from the label in some mushroom gummies that contained it.
Kratom / mitragynine / 7-OH
Kratom's best-known alkaloid has been found undisclosed in a 'mushroom' gummy. Why concentrated 7-OH products are different from kratom leaf.
On the label 'Kratom', 'ketum', 'mitragynine' or '7-OH' on kratom products. Not listed on the mushroom gummy where mitragynine was found.
THC / cannabinoids
Undisclosed THC has turned up in 'nootropic' mushroom gummies. Poison-centre data on THC edibles, especially for young children.
On the label 'Hemp extract', 'Δ9-THC', 'delta-8' or 'full-spectrum' on cannabis products. Not listed on the mushroom gummies where THC was found.
Proprietary / nootropic mushroom blend
Lion's mane and reishi aren't psychoactive. But 'nootropic blend' labels have been on gummies that contained psilocin, THC and synthetic tryptamines.
On the label 'Proprietary nootropic mushroom blend', 'microdosed nootropic blend', 'mushroom blend extract' or a list of functional mushrooms.
